The beautiful, and rambunctious Sika deer roam freely by the thousands in the park at the center of Nara, Japan. Considered sacred - killing one of these deer was a capital offense until 1637. Now, protected as National Treasures, tourists and visiting school children feed them crackers. I like to think I managed to capture something of their divine nature in this image.

I was staring at this image, trying to remember exactly where in Kyoto I was when I took it, and have only just now realized that it is actually a double exposure. I think that it is both a view from Kyoto Tower and perhaps a train station. To be honest - I'm really not sure. But I am blown away at how perfectly the horizon line matches. Hard to believe it was an accident.

I'm not usually one for cityscapes, but for some reason while in Japan, especially in Osaka, I felt sort of compelled, corporate logos and all. My little Lubitel served me pretty well on the trip and it feels good to have more 2 1/4" images so I think I'll follow this theme for the next couple posts.

Also, in recent news, I appear to be the proud owner of a round trip ticket to Warsaw, Poland. I'll be headed out in February with my fellow world-travel-on-a-dime-partner-in-crime Nathan. We haven't figured out all the details yet and it'll be a rather short trip but I can't wait.

If anyone happens to have any travel tips or advice - bring it on! I'll be my first adventure in that part of the world so I welcome all the info I can get.

I have a small cache of images from my recent trip to Japan that I'm still sort of mulling over. It's sometimes hard to know where the line between tourist images, travel photos and art lies. To be honest, I'm not sure it matters. To me travelling offers me small glimpses and impressions of a world outside my own, and in the end I suppose that's what I've always found in photography as well. And as I travel more, as is my current goal, this will only become more relevant to both my work and what I post here.

So, expect more images from my travels to come. I won't always know how to categorize them, not that I do that much curating on this blog anyway, but I'm always curious to know what you think regardless and curious to see where that line is for other people.

So... its been almost a year since I've posted. But that doesn't mean I've stopped taking pictures. Regularity, as is not surprising for those who follow this blog, is still something I strive for. I don't want to promise more and frequent posting to follow but I do hope that will be the case. At any rate, I do have a new camera, and one that likes to give me many happy accidents that remind me why I'm glad I shoot film and inspire me to shoot more.

Holy crap its been months. In defense of my absence I had to move and found a hook up to a black and white darkroom so I can print, and there by hopefully show, some of my images. New posts are coming soon as are new pictures. I have three rolls waiting to be processed and am still working my way through my archives. So, it's been nearly two years since I graduated, and I've been realizing lately that organizing my negatives was one of those priorities after leaving art school that I never really followed through on. I also never archived almost any of my work. The few images out of hundreds of rolls of film that have made it on to this blog are really all I had ever scanned in.

This is a rather lengthy way to describe why I am now surrounded by a sea of negatives, a brand new scanner and an assortment of dust repellants. Observe:

I may have been a bit optimistic about how disorganized I was before and how much time this little endeavor will take. It's all for the best though since it can only get worse with time. AND! it means more images coming your way via this blog. There are sure to be (and so far are) any number of pictures that I never had time to print while I was in school (and/or managed to escape my attention at the time) that are now getting my full attention due to the lengthy process of scanning.

There are also of course a few more images from this last trip to Maine that I will keep posting, including some that will be following this post in short order. So wish me luck with my mountain of scanning and enjoy!

I'm back and I've got new film to boot. A recent excursion with some good friends (cosmically inspired by my last post) landed me in maine during a rainy weekend and a camera. Save for the risk of destroying my camera in torrential downpour, I'd say it was a pretty great combo. Anyway, I have some new images now and am reinvigorated. There are plans in the works for future trips and projects which will hopefully get off the ground in short order. In the meantime, enjoy the new work.

It's mostly black and white for now. Theres another color roll waiting to be developed so I'm going to wait on posting the color work until I have all of it back.

I was cleaning up the house a couple of weeks ago and stumbled across a roll of film that apparently never got developed. I got the mystery roll processed and discovered it was from a trip to maine I took a couple of years ago with my good friends Melissa and Mike, both of whom I have since lost touch with for the most part. The trip itself was an amazing journey for me and it was remarkable to find more evidence from it after so long. There were only about 5 or 6 images on it due to a malfunctioning camera, but this image stood out to me and I wanted to share it. Enjoy.

So I finally got a few short trips in, and while I'm not left with a huge pile of new images, I do have a few that I'm curious about. Posting will probably slow down as fall and winter arrive, partly because its usually harder for me to travel, but also because my favorite kinds of light are near impossible to capture. I have some plans and thoughts in the works though and will do my best to keep this blog reflective of them. The first batch of attempts will be soon to follow.

So, the posting has been a bit more sparse as of late than I would like it to. Which really can mean only one thing. Its high time for new adventures, as I am not only an adventuring addict but my pictures do often seem to turn out best when off exploring new surroundings. I'm in the process of planning more of these excursions, with a definite trip set for later this month. Until then I'll post whatever I can, photo's of mine or others that intrigue me or that I find pertty and all that other fun stuff.

At long last the site is up and running and allows you to actually see things! Sorry it took so long to put up but it has been a hectic few weeks. It is still on the more basic side of things, due to the enevitable complete overhaul, but it does excitingly have a link to kipton art where my work is available to purchase. So I can't quite remember when I decided to do start doing this exactly but for the last year or two I have been trying to maintain a very specific photo diary of sorts. That of take-off and landings and the strange ride in between. I fly a lot. At least for someone on a modest income and no transcontinental business duties. And so, on the 8 or so minimum plane rides I take each year, I take at least one photo. As I'm flying back home early this morning I figured It would be thematically appropriate to include an earlier photo from this series.

State of The Union

So, in an effort to post more and after many talks with both friends and generous strangers I have decided to start posting more digital work. The two most recent posts are already examples of this shift, and for anyone who knows me it may seem a bit strange. Without access to the labs and an uncharted school-less landscape ahead of me I have decided there is really no point in being all persnickety over digital vs analog. If it helps me make work than so be it.

Right now I really don't have much in the way of a digital camera, and that is unlikely to change anytime soon. As such all of these posts will be labeled "Point-N-Shoot". Please keep in mind that these are shot with a small 3 megapixel camera with no initial intention to be anything other than family photos, essentially. As a result they will likely not be of the same file quality as my film work.

They will however mean more new work and a means by which to get me out of my head - which to my mind is a very good thing.

So, once again, almost unsurprisingly lately, I haven't updated much. The reason of course is that I haven't really taken pictures of any kind for quite some time. Which, at least for the time being, has started to change. A recent trip to the pacific northwest and another to Italy have left me with quite a few rolls of film just waiting to be developed. In the meantime there are believe it or not a few digital images that I'm rather fond of. They are not "my work" but I like em just the same so I thought I'd show one or two here.

So, I seem to have abandoned this site for a while. Not just the site really, I also haven't taken a picture in months. Trying to sort things out or what not I guess. I've been thinking more and more about photography lately and there is definitely a large part of me that would like to start taking pictures again. To that end I have decided that I should be more proactive in this area of my life. Force myself to pick up my camera. As that hasn't happened yet I don't currently have any new pictures. But I do have some old ones that never saw the light of day, so I think I'll dust em off and put em on here. So I'm out of school for the summer and with that comes the loss of both printing and computer lab access. As such posting will be sporadic at best and will largely depend on when i have the money to get prints back and make somewhat decent, if not stellar, flatbed scans.
